Rémy started out as a student in a business school, went on to obtain a degree in economics before taking up a job as a supervisor in a secondary school. No aspect of Rémy’s education and career path could have foretold his future as a software designer if it weren’t for his passion for development and unwavering determination. Originally from Toulon, Rémy joined Naval Group in 2019. His atypical career path was no hindrance to his recruitment: his skills and motivation combined with his poise during the interview were more than convincing and left no doubt that his profile was well-suited to the Mission and Combat Systems Department. “I needed to work soon after I had graduated. As a youth activity leader, I was used to interacting with children and teenagers so I decided to apply as boarding school supervisor in a secondary school, a position I went on to hold for six years. Software development was already a long-standing hobby for me at the time. Passionate about IT since I was a child, I taught myself and picked up skills in the field,” explains Rémy. He continues, “I took the decision to become a developer while I was still working at the secondary school and enrolled in a training course at the GRETA training centre in the Var region to consolidate the skills I had already acquired. After just a few days, I knew I had made the right choice. I was of course familiar with Naval Group in Toulon and knew that the prospects for software development were particularly interesting. I went ahead, applied online and was contacted for an interview. I believe that my motivation came across clearly and I was able to demonstrate that I had the necessary skills and knowledge despite my unconventional educational and professional path.”
Capitalising on past experience
Hired in the technician-supervisor category, Rémy became Team Leader in 2022 and his team has expanded since. It now consists of five developers whose mission is to implement patches and develop software upgrades. Rémy was promoted to the executive category in June after successfully following the requisite in-house program. “My past experience is an asset in my work today. It has allowed me to acquire management, interpersonal and communication skills that serve me on a daily basis to manage my team or in exchanges with employees from different backgrounds and trades. I enjoy managing a team and making sure that each team member is thriving in their work. I myself have progressed and grown professionally thanks to my team. Together, we have responded to the different challenges on our submarine programs. I’m a great fan of visual management! We gather around the progress board every morning so that each team member is aware of the other’s tasks and how far we’ve progressed on our common objective to deliver the expected scope of work. My next aim is to take on the role of Department Manager.”
