From its design to its maintenance, each phase of its lifecycle requires a mastery of the most sophisticated engineering and naval techniques by successive generations of navy and industry personnel. How can we maintain a vessel’s performance and ensure the competencies of its crew over several decades? Valérie Lamarque, department head at DCNS Universeaty®, explains the importance of training for the client navies.
Why do naval defence industries currently sell training? Isn’t it rather the role of the navy or training organisations?
To be credible in the area of training, you must be truly knowledgeable in the area you teach. In the naval defence sectors, DCNS possesses unique legitimacy.

Lastly, we master pedagogical engineering. We have been training navies from all around the world for over 20 years now in the frame of technology transfers. We design our courses to be suited to our clients so that the knowledge acquired by our trainees is solid and durable. To reach this goal, we make use of different tools (theoretical lessons, hands-on lessons, virtual reality, simulators…) and we capitalise on an exceptional network of 3000 instructors.
How has DCNS Universeaty® reinvented training for the naval sector?
Our conviction is that DCNS Universeaty® must be a place of perpetual innovation to adapt to new generations and reach our learning goal. New technologies have turned learning methods on their head and we are highly interested in new tools such as virtual classes or the inverted classroom tailored to our sector.
We also propose consulting services in addition to our training offering. We have developed specific expertise in change management and industrial efficiency and some of our consultants have already conducted missions for Malaysia or Brazil.
Do you work with other schools or universities?
To respond to all the requests of our clients and maintain excellence as a goal, the issue of partnerships is at the heart of our development. We are increasingly frequently asked by our clients to help them increase the competencies of their trainees right from the initial stages before entering sector-specific training modules.
Because our core business is not that of providing initial academic training, we are looking for partners located close to our clients to enhance our courses. Thus, in Brazil, we have established a partnership with Senai (Brazilian organisation for professional training), ICN and the French Ministry of Education for the setting up of a technical training course.
Of course, we also have our network of French partners with a special link to the Ecole Navale (Naval Academy), which trains officers of the French Navy, our reference client.
