Tell us about your career path...

I joined Naval Group in October 2012 as Handling Installation Manager after 19 years of service with the French Navy in the field of naval aviation. I now work as Systems Manager in the Surface Ship Engineering Department. I, together with the Installations Managers in my team, design, lay out, specify and monitor the assembly of mechanical installations as well as tests on the ship’s platform, in the aviation and naval fields. I am currently in charge of presenting our design to shipyards who will be building offshore patrol vessels.

How did you hear about the Operational reserve?

A retired naval officer and in charge of the National Reservist Day in Lorient invited me to attend this event in 2023. The Operational reserve had already attracted my interest for several years at the time. I had always been passionate about aeronautics and never lost my zeal for flying! I was waiting for a suitable opportunity to present itself at the right time, from the personal as well as professional point of view before applying. Last year proved to be opportune in this regard so I went ahead and found out more. Thierry gave me explanations on the principle of the Operational reserve and sent me the newsletter of the Reservist employment centre (APER) in Brest. I came across an offer that matched my skills, so I decided to go ahead and apply right away.

What was the process to become a reservist?

I spoke to my manager and we agreed on a number of days compatible with my activities at Naval Group. I sent my application to APER once the Navy approved my availability and after one last meeting with my Human Resources Manager. Following a break of thirteen years, I took up the position of flight engineer in naval aviation on 1 July and I fulfil my duties once a week on the base in Landivisiau. I started my technical training on the ground and will soon progress to flight simulations followed by operational flights.

Mission accomplished! What has this meant for you?

I’m happy to be able to divide my time between Naval Group and naval aviation. I feel twice as useful in both these entities that share the same values of engagement and excellence.

I was able to join the Operational reserve thanks to my experience in aviation. Nevertheless, the government is looking to increase the number of reservists and offer positions suitable to the largest number of profiles possible, regardless of skills, age or gender. The APER centres in Brest and Toulon can also examine applications to offer specific specialist positions or other types of jobs.

Naval Group offers employees 20 days of annual paid leave over and above the standard number of leave days, for their reservist assignments. Days on reserve assignments are also remunerated and non-taxable by the employing ministry.
