Why does it matter ?

Specialised warships need protection from complementary assets.

The FDI, as a multimission frigate, is an independent, flexible tactical asset: each ship can act alone or as a force aggregator. These qualities are increasingly important to win at sea, given the growing complexity of naval warfare and the extremely rapid diversification of threats.

With versatility comes greater freedom of action and initiative. Navies need warships that matter, where it matters, when it matters.

Other notable advantages: streamline crew training, optimize fleet availability and enhance operations in coalition with allied navies by providing a fully flexible naval asset.

Making the most out of real life experience

In December 2023, French FREMM Languedoc was targeted by hostiles aerial drones, in the Red Sea.

Thanks to this multimission philosophy, the crew and the frigate were ready, and successfully engaged and destroyed the threats.

Naval Group continuously incorporates operational feedbacks to best identify the needs and challenges of navies, leveraging its close proximity to the French Navy.

The FDI, with its scalable design and potential, embodies decades of 1st tier experience.

A true European solution

Full European sovereignty, throughout the life-cycle of the ship, for strategic autonomy and freedom of action.

A frigate fully integrated in NATO framework:

  • Equipped with state-of-the-art long-range defence systems, sensors, and CMS already in service with NATO allies;
  • Hardware and software compatibility with third-parties weapons and systems, to meet specific needs, at the customer’s request;
  • Full compliance with NATO standards and procedures;
  • Interoperability with allies demonstrated, on a daily basis, through the French Navy’s numerous deployments, trainings and operations all over the globe;
  • Already chosen by two European countries, members of NATO.

In the Navy, NATO is practically our second native language [...] Being interoperable is the combination of three conditions: connectivity of equipment that must be able to communicate with each other; shared and sea-proven procedures and know-how; and finally — and above all — trust.”

Admiral Vaujour Chief of Staff of the French Navy
