Thinking out of the box and beyond the standard logic of “one launcher for one type of weapon”, the MPLS is Naval Group’s answer to the multifaceted and asymmetrical warfare seen in present days. The MPLS, truly representative of breakthrough technology, is capable of deploying several vectors while accommodating an unprecedented payload and offering simplified onboard integration.
The MPLS provides a near-field self-defence capability of up to eight kilometres, the option of easily integrating additional capabilities thanks to its interchangeable munition modules technology (rockets, missiles, grenades, underwater weapons, decoys, drones). Furthermore, the MPLS also offers an enhanced payload capacity of around 1,000 kilos.
The MPLS is the answer to the following challenges:
- Enhancing capability in dealing with threats with launchers accommodating an increased payload
- Boosting traditional systems with reinforced capabilities in dealing with near-field threats
- Quick and cost-effective integration of new munitions
- A new range of munitions to respond proportionately to the cost of threats
- Reconfiguring its weapons
- Easy onboard integration (pyrotechnics, environment, mass)
How does it work?
The MPLS is composed of a mobile turret on two training and elevation axes. Firing calculators and fire control are integrated into this system, enabling it to reach moving targets. It can function either in an autonomous mode or connected to the combat system. A ship can have one or more MPLS turrets that can combine different weapons configurations depending on operational needs.
Operational superiority driven by technological innovation
The MPLS is the only product in the market offering a turret with a one-tonne payload and a total loaded mass of less than 3.5 tonnes. It can be reconfigured depending on the needs of a given mission thanks to its modularity which also facilitates incremental upgrades in its future capabilities at controlled costs and within controlled lead times. It is versatile enough to vary munition configurations depending on the best option for facing diverse threats.
A break with traditional industrial models
The modular design of the system simplifies and accelerates the integration of munitions adapted to operational expectations. The design of sub-assemblies and interfaces has been optimised, making the MPLS competitive, simple and robust.
This new-generation weapons system offers the opportunity to take an equipment park approach at the scale of a ship and a fleet, thus optimising logistic support and crew training. This break from a more standard model guarantees not only economic gains but operational availability as well.
