Can you tell us about your career path before joining Naval Group?
I am originally from the Paris region. I worked in the hotel and catering sector from the age of fifteen both in France and in England gaining experience in kitchens, front of house and at events. I eventually set up and ran my own establishment in Paris for ten years, before deciding to move to Normandy.
How did you discover Naval Group and the CQPM marine mechanical fitter training?
I was already keen on changing careers when a friend told me about Naval Group. When I heard about the opportunity to train as a marine mechanical fitter, it really resonated with me, all the more since I was keen on taking up welding. Moreover, I saw it as an opportunity to contribute to France’s defence industry. It was something that really appealed to me, so I decided to attend the training presentation to find out more about the company and the job. After a number of conclusive tests, I began the training and discovered a fascinating job!
What did you enjoy about this training?
We covered a lot of theory, getting to know the essentials and learning about the trade and I also got the chance to participate in machining and fitting activities during our immersion weeks. Working in Naval Group’s workshops is awesome, as we work directly on submarines! Moreover, the amazing drive of employees on site is really palpable! One of the highlights of my first week on the site of Cherbourg was getting to work on the new robot used to machine soft patches.
What projects have you worked on since being recruited?
Like most of my classmates who graduated, I was recruited by Naval Group at the end of 2024. My function is as an onboard machining mechanic and I primarily work on the Barracuda series of submarines. I continue to discover and learn new techniques, especially with the development of robotisation.
If you are interested in joining CQPM’s second cohort of marine mechanical fitters in Cherbourg, information sessions are scheduled from March 17-20 from 9 am to 12 pm at the Amphitheatre of the UIMM training centre (PF UIMM), rue du Général Koenig in Cherbourg.
